A disputed three-story addition to a Fairfax County home will not proceed as proposed after a zoning board rejected the homeowner’s appeal. Neighborhood opposition to the project has also led county officials to reconsider height limits for single-family houses.

Virginia will impose tougher screening rules on rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft beginning July 1. Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed two bills strengthening driver background-check and identity-verification requirements.

Certification of Virginia’s recent redistricting referendum remains paused. The state’s highest court on Tuesday allowed a county judge’s temporary order blocking certification to stay in effect. Voters approved the Democratic-drawn congressional map last week; it is intended to help flip four Republican-held U.S. House seats.

Spanberger is also considering a Dominion Energy-backed bill after lawmakers rejected some of her proposed cost-saving changes. The measure would shift certain electric-grid upgrade expenses to data centers and permit Dominion to spend $900,000 per mile to bury local distribution lines.

Virginia lawmakers remain divided over tax incentives for data centers. Senate leaders favor ending the industry’s sales and use tax exemption, while a House of Delegates spending plan would preserve it only for facilities meeting new environmental requirements. Those conditions would include energy-efficiency commitments and a ban on locating data centers alongside power facilities that emit carbon.

Regency Furniture opened April 25 in Bailey’s Crossroads, taking over the former Value City Furniture space. The retailer sells sofas, chairs, bedroom and dining sets, office furniture, tables and decorative accessories.

Food For Neighbors collected about 22,300 pounds of food in Fairfax County on Saturday during its final Red Bag event of the school year. The nonprofit said the donations are particularly important because no additional Red Bag collections are scheduled before the academic year ends.

McLean High School partnered with Virginia State Police for a distracted-driving awareness demonstration. The event showed students the risks of losing focus behind the wheel and emphasized safer driving choices.
