A section of the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail near Newington will close Monday, March 17, for a major Fairfax County wastewater rehabilitation project expected to continue until winter 2026.
The affected stretch runs through Pohick Stream Valley Park between Cliff Forest Drive and Wadebrook Terrace. It will be fully closed for three months during the initial construction phase.
Crews will replace the Pohick Interceptor, a sanitary sewer pipe running through the area. The project includes renewing approximately 6,500 linear feet of large-diameter pipe and associated maintenance hole structures.
Fairfax County says the work should extend the infrastructure’s life by about 50 years, reduce the need for emergency repairs and help maintain reliable wastewater service.
After work at the northern end of the project area is completed, a detour along Pohick Road will remain in place for an estimated 12 to 15 months while the rest of the rehabilitation proceeds. Weather conditions could affect the schedule.
The Cross County Trail spans more than 40 miles across Fairfax County, connecting the Potomac River at Great Falls Park in the north with the Occoquan River at Occoquan Regional Park in the south.
