Reagan National Airport will close its runways for much of July 3 and 4 as Washington prepares for Independence Day celebrations featuring aerial performances and an ambitious fireworks display. No flights will be scheduled after noon on July 4.

Twenty-five Democratic state senators and delegates from Northern Virginia are asking the National Park Service to reject President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot “triumphal arch” near Arlington National Cemetery and Memorial Bridge. In a letter sent Monday, the lawmakers argued that the structure would damage historic sites and obstruct a deliberately preserved view.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 30 for a Fairfax County mother and daughter accused of operating a sex-trafficking enterprise in Alexandria and Fairfax County. The women, ages 21 and 51, have been held without bond since their May 4 arrests.

Former Vice President Mike Pence received $150,000 to teach or co-teach a George Mason University course during the spring 2026 semester. The appointment was made under a nine-month contract, according to a document obtained by the university chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

Virginia Senate President Louise Lucas addressed the FBI searches of her private business and district office for the first time Monday. Lucas said the timing appeared coincidental with her effort to redraw Virginia’s political districts to benefit Democrats. She also noted that authorities have announced no charges or arrests.

Underdog Coffee and Bread has expanded to Bailey’s Crossroads, opening at 3511 Carlin Springs Road next to REI. The shop initially offers the same menu as its café at 7109 Columbia Pike, though manager Kyungjin Yoon said each location is eventually expected to feature its own coffee drinks.

Capital Area Food Bank has begun providing free summer meals as classes end for many students across the Washington region, including those in Fairfax County Public Schools on Wednesday. Families with children 18 and younger can eat without advance approval at 17 participating locations in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Reston Association directors have started shaping the organization’s 2027 budget. During a June 11 meeting and work session, the board reviewed more than 140 suggestions from members. Ideas included adding a waiting area at the Autumnwood pickleball courts, improving security at Dogwood Pool and upgrading the Baron Cameron Avenue entrance to Lake Anne Village Center.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for sunshine, a high near 88 degrees and southwest winds of 3 to 8 mph. Skies will become partly cloudy overnight as temperatures fall to about 69. South winds of 5 to 9 mph could gust as high as 20 mph.
