Dogs and their owners packed the George Washington Middle School parking lot April 12 as the fourth annual Del Ray Dog Fest raised money to help provide healthcare for retired Alexandria police K-9s.

The afternoon festival brought live music, food and dog-centered competitions to the Del Ray neighborhood. Organized by the Del Ray Business Association, it featured 52 small businesses, eight animal rescue organizations and 27 local sponsors.

“What a gorgeous day,” said Joey Schaljo, a Del Ray resident and public-address announcer for the Washington Mystics. “This is proof that mother nature herself is a fan of dogs.”

Dogs tackled a luring course, played in an off-leash puppy area and competed in a fashion show. The schedule also included the distracted dog race, which challenged participants to stay focused despite playful temptations.

A new “Sit Happens” contest offered a canine take on musical chairs. Other activities included “Pups n’ Poses” yoga for dogs and their owners and a “Smooch Your Pooch” kissing booth sponsored by the Alexandria Police Foundation.

APF board chair Charlotte Hall said Lisa Shaw and Marshall Construction donated the booth.

“And it’s one good-looking kissing booth,” Hall said.

Kathryn Martinez returned to the fashion show for a second year with her dog, LouLou Lemon, wearing a handmade costume.

“We waited all year for this event,” Martinez said.

Musician Rook Richards performed throughout the afternoon as families visited vendor booths, Rescue Row and activity areas. Food and beverages were available, including menu items made for dogs.

Proceeds benefited the Alexandria Police Foundation’s Caring for K9s Program, which helps cover essential healthcare for retired police dogs that served the Alexandria community.

Festival rules required standard six-foot leashes and current vaccinations. Organizers also limited the number of dogs each adult could handle to help keep animals and visitors safe and comfortable.
