Democrats won both Northern Virginia special elections held Tuesday to fill vacancies created by appointments to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration.
Elizabeth Bennett-Parker captured 82.6% of the vote in Virginia Senate District 39, defeating Republican Julie Lineberry, according to results available at noon Wednesday. The district includes parts of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County.
The Senate opening followed Spanberger’s nomination of Sen. Adam Ebbin to her administration. Bennett-Parker then left her House of Delegates seat to seek Ebbin’s position.
Alexandria voters chose Democrat Kirk McPike to replace Bennett-Parker in House District 5. McPike received 91.5% of the vote against Republican Mason Butler.
The contests were part of a series of special elections across Virginia prompted by Spanberger selecting sitting legislators for roles in her administration.
