Improperly discarded smoking material sparked a fire at a Fairfax County home undergoing renovations, causing an estimated $108,600 in damage.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department crews responded to the 4700 block of Twinbrook Road in the Kings Park West area at about 5:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1. Smoke and flames were visible at the rear of the house when units arrived.
Firefighters quickly began suppression efforts and brought the blaze under control. No residents or firefighters were injured.
The home was unoccupied during the fire. A neighbor spotted the flames and called 911.
Investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal determined that the accidental fire began in discarded construction material behind the house and was caused by improperly discarded smoking material.
