Doorways welcomed new families and longtime supporters on May 7 for its 20th annual Pig & Oyster Roast, a fundraiser that has grown from a neighborhood gathering into a major community event.

Executive Director and President Diana Ortiz greeted guests at the entrance to Rocklands’ outdoor patio as morning clouds gave way to bright sunshine.

“This started 20 years ago as a neighborhood get together and over the years has grown into this pig & oyster event,” Ortiz said. She added that the fundraiser introduces new visitors to Doorways’ work while drawing supporters who return year after year.

Jim Sheats One Man Band entertained the crowd as guests made their way toward a whole pig on the grill and a rapidly disappearing supply of oysters. Robin Baz prepared 600 Maryland oysters, grilling each for five minutes and serving them with melted butter, tarragon, red onions and vinaigrette.

Guests wearing purple wristbands lined up for Rocklands mac and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw and salad before collecting their pork and oyster entrées and finding seats at picnic tables.

Right Proper, a local D.C. brewery, offered an IPA and a lager alongside several wines. Evlyn Esebana said rosé was the afternoon’s most popular selection.

The fundraiser also featured $5 raffle tickets, with a beach package and barbecue set among the most sought-after prizes. Ticket holder Kent Hamaker considered the barbecue set despite joking that he never wins raffles.

Doorways helps people escape homelessness, domestic violence and sexual assault. The nonprofit operates Arlington’s only emergency shelter for survivors and their families and provides counseling, court advocacy, safety planning and in-person support. It also runs a 24-hour hotline for survivors of domestic abuse.
