All U.S.-bound flights carrying travelers who visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan during the previous 21 days have been ordered to land at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Department of Homeland Security issued the directive after the discovery of a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak.
Virginia drivers will get a temporary break from many highway work zones over Memorial Day weekend. The Virginia Department of Transportation will lift temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads from noon Friday, May 22, through noon Tuesday, May 26. Some semi-permanent work zones will remain.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board has also approved moving money from construction projects and other areas to cover a $193 million VDOT budget shortfall. Increased storm-response spending and employee bonuses contributed to the gap.

Fairfax County detectives charged two suspects in retail theft cases involving nearly $10,000 in merchandise. The stolen goods included LEGO sets, clothing and small appliances taken from Target, Home Depot and Walmart stores in incidents dating to December 2025.
In Herndon, a crash involving a Fairfax Connector bus closed two lanes of Herndon Parkway on Thursday afternoon. Fairfax County police reported minor damage and no injuries.
New Virginia measures addressing invasive species will give local governments more opportunities to cooperate on control efforts. The laws also establish new requirements for VDOT’s management of roadside plants and close a loophole governing plants prohibited from sale in the commonwealth.
Fairfax County will mark Memorial Day by offering veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families free access to select Park Authority amenities on Monday, May 25. The offer includes recreation center admission and camping at Lake Fairfax Park, along with wagon rides at Frying Pan Farm Park for active service members.
