Dunkin’ rolled out its seasonal summer menu April 29, embracing everything from fruit-punch doughnut holes to the viral dirty soda trend. But across four new items, excessive sweetness and uneven execution often overshadowed the more appealing flavors and textures.

Dunkin Dirty Soda: 3/10

The Dunkin Dirty Soda combines iced Pepsi, coffee and creamy cold foam. Instead of tasting like an upgraded version of Pepsi, however, the drink was dominated by coffee.

The carbonation-and-coffee pairing was intriguing at first, but the intense flavor quickly became overwhelming. The drink also arrived without the advertised layer of cold foam, leaving it far less visually appealing than expected.

Fruit Punch Munchkins: 5/10

These treats start with Dunkin’s old-fashioned blueberry Munchkins and add a thick shell of hard sugar crystals. Their dull colors and patchy coating did not match the polished promotional images, though the concept was at least distinctive.

The sugar added little beyond intense sweetness. A crunchy exterior contrasted nicely with the soft doughnut center, but that satisfying texture was not enough to overcome the sugary coating.

Oreo Coffee Chiller: 6/10

The Oreo Coffee Chiller is a blended iced coffee packed with Oreo syrups, sauces and cookie pieces. With barely any noticeable coffee flavor and a powerful Oreo aftertaste, it tasted more like dessert than a morning drink.

Cookie chunks made the chiller more filling and brought some variety to an otherwise familiar blended beverage. Despite its unnecessary sweetness, the mix of textures and strong Oreo flavor made it enjoyable in moderation.

Cherry Lime Ricky Refresher: 6/10

Dunkin’s Cherry Lime Ricky Refresher blends concentrated black cherry flavor with its standard limeade. The result resembled a melted cherry popsicle, with only a faint trace of lime.

Its cherry-forward profile was not the problem; the heavy concentration of syrup was. Melting ice eventually diluted the drink enough to make it more tolerable, but at full strength it was simply too sweet to be refreshing.
