McLean’s girls basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 50-19 loss at Washington-Liberty on Jan. 13, extending the Highlanders’ losing streak despite a more competitive second half.

The Highlanders entered the district matchup seeking an offensive turnaround after consecutive defeats, including a 24-10 loss to Marshall. Junior guard Cora Stevens expected Washington-Liberty’s speed, physical play and strong interior presence to test McLean.

Washington-Liberty quickly established control behind senior forward Eve Jungman and sophomore forward Anna Jungman. McLean frequently sent double-teams into the paint but still struggled to contain the Generals.

An 11-0 opening run put the Highlanders in an immediate hole as poor shot selection limited their offense. Stevens attacked the basket and made one of two free throws to get McLean on the scoreboard, but Washington-Liberty finished the first quarter with a 17-3 lead.

The Generals opened the second quarter with another 6-0 run. McLean’s turnovers and offensive struggles repeatedly created fast-break opportunities for Washington-Liberty, which carried a 33-7 advantage into halftime.

Najarian made two free throws to begin the third quarter, and McLean followed with two quick baskets to trim the deficit to 23. The Highlanders nearly matched Washington-Liberty’s production after halftime, getting outscored 17-12 over the final two quarters.

The improved finish could not erase the massive early gap, and the Generals closed out the 50-19 victory.

Najarian said McLean needed better transition defense and rebounding after Washington-Liberty repeatedly beat the Highlanders down the court and controlled the boards. Still, the team found some encouragement in committing fewer turnovers than it had against Marshall and remaining composed through the final quarter.

McLean will next travel to Wakefield, where the Highlanders will try to end their skid and revive their offense. Najarian said stronger defensive communication, sharper passing and better teamwork will be essential.
