Three award-winning Edison Academy students are transforming hands-on training in HVAC, computer networking and other technical fields into plans for the professional world.
The students recently competed at the state level in SkillsUSA, an organization that tests career and technical abilities. Mohammad placed in three categories: Program Design, HVAC and T-Shirt Design. His path began with an interest in photography before expanding into other technical disciplines.
Mohammad joined fellow state champions Ceaser and Sam for a conversation with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid on the “Our Voices, Our Future” program. Ceaser and Sam earned gold medals in Career Pathways and Internetworking, respectively.
Career Pathways challenges students to turn technical knowledge into a professional plan. Internetworking focuses on building and managing computer networks, while HVAC covers heating and cooling systems.
The students said achievement requires “hard work, consistency, and discipline.” Their next steps include pursuing a cybersecurity degree and joining Steamfitters Local 602, showing how Edison Academy’s programs can help bridge the distance between high school and employment.
Reid emphasized the demand for HVAC technicians and network specialists and said preparing students for the working world is essential.
“The future is really bright,” she said.
