Fairfax County Public Schools has adjusted its calendar after a lunar sighting moved the observance of Eid al-Adha one day earlier than anticipated. The holiday will begin at sundown Thursday, June 5, 2025, and continue through Friday, June 6.
Thursday will be an evening-only observance day, while Friday will be a full observance day. Events that cannot be rescheduled on short notice, including graduations, will proceed as planned.
Quizzes, tests, field trips and FCPS-scheduled athletic contests would ordinarily be avoided on an observance day. Because of the late change, however, activities that cannot be moved will continue. Students observing Eid al-Adha will receive an alternate day after the holiday to complete missed work.
Bus delays are possible June 6 because transportation employees may be celebrating the holiday. Families can check the Bus Delay Notification System or the Here Comes the Bus app for updates.
School Year Ends June 11
The final day of school is Wednesday, June 11, with early dismissal. Families should contact their schools for specific dismissal times.
Before the year ends, students should return library books and any applicable FCPS laptops. Families are also encouraged to pay outstanding MySchoolBucks balances and retrieve medications kept at school. A parent or guardian must pick up medication in person.
The 2025-26 school year begins Monday, August 18. FCPS has also posted a draft calendar for 2027-28 as part of the School Board’s preference for making calendars available three years in advance.
Ten More School-Zone Speed Cameras Coming
The Fairfax County Police Department is installing speed cameras at 10 additional school-zone locations, expanding a program that already has nine cameras issuing tickets.
A warning period begins Wednesday, July 2, with citations scheduled to start Friday, August 18, at these locations:
- Cardinal Forest Elementary School on Forrester Boulevard.
- Mount Vernon High School and Riverside Elementary School’s shared zone on Old Mt. Vernon Road.
- Belvedere Elementary School on Columbia Road.
Another warning period begins Friday, August 18, followed by citations starting Wednesday, September 17, at:
- Chantilly High School on Stringfellow Road.
- Edison High School on Franconia Road.
- The shared South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School and Terraset Elementary School zone on South Lakes Drive.
- Marshall High School on Leesburg Pike.
- McLean High School on Westmorland Road.
- The shared Robinson Secondary School and Oak View Elementary School zone on Sideburn Road.
- Stone Middle School on Braddock Road.
Summer Meals, Learning and Reading
FCPS is directing families to its Summer Resource Guide for camps, activities, health information and safety tips. Additional resources may be added during the summer. Its Summer Learning materials also offer ideas for exploring new interests, reinforcing concepts and keeping students engaged before classes resume in August.
The Summer Meal Service Program will provide free breakfast and lunch to all children age 18 and younger. Dates, times and locations are expected to appear in mid-June through Food and Nutrition Services and the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder. Meals will not be served on the June 19 or July 4 holidays. Questions may be directed to 703-813-4800.
The Fairfax County Public Library’s Summer Reading Adventure begins Wednesday, June 11. The Fairfax Library Foundation will also hold a free Children’s Summer Reading Festival at Sherwood Regional Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14. Activities will include games, crafts, face painting, a bounce house and snacks.
SAT and PSAT Support Requests Carry August Deadlines
Every FCPS high school will administer the SAT School Day and PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test on Wednesday, October 8, at no cost to families.
The digital SAT School Day test is for 12th-grade students. The digital PSAT/NMSQT will be offered to students in grades 10 and 11.
Because the College Board operates the exams, accommodations and multilingual learner supports are not granted automatically. Families of students with disabilities entering grades 10, 11 or 12 must review the request process and return forms to the high school by Monday, August 4, for new or updated testing accommodations.
Multilingual learners entering those grades must submit support-request forms by Thursday, August 28, if they want assistance for the October exams.
Theater Students Earn Recognition
FCPS students were recognized during the Cappies of the National Capital Area awards gala June 2 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Falls Church High School senior Colt Armstrong received the Cappie for Lead Actor in a Male Role in a Musical. Superintendent Michelle Reid had previously seen Armstrong portray Gomez Addams in the school’s production of “The Addams Family.”
Armstrong later discussed his path through theater, performed vocally and taught Reid several dance steps for an “Our Voices, Our Future” video. After graduation, he plans to study vocal performance at Carnegie Mellon University.
Herndon High School senior James Culatta also returned to the stage after an accident left him with third-degree burns over more than half of his body. He spent the first half of his senior year relearning to walk, returned to school in the middle of the year and pursued a lead role in “Footloose.”
Final Boundary Meeting Set for June 6
The last community meeting before summer break on the initial school-boundary draft scenarios will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Glasgow Middle School.
The hybrid meeting will accommodate both in-person and virtual participation. Child care will be available for those attending in person, while interpretation and translation can be provided as needed.
Online registrants should receive a Zoom link within 24 business hours. Participants will be able to submit feedback through an online tool, with comments displayed in real time. The collected responses will be compiled, analyzed and posted on the Comprehensive Boundary Review webpage.
Central Volunteer System Planned
FCPS intends to launch Volunteer FCPS, a centralized volunteer-management system for every school, during the 2025-26 academic year.
Parents and community members will be able to search for opportunities through the system. It will also track information including school visits and completion of background checks.
The system is being tested at eight schools. The offices of Safety and Security, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Family and School Partnerships are working on the transition. A link to the new webpage is expected during the summer.
Free Summer Mental Health Support
Parents and middle and high school students can schedule free virtual mental wellness consultations from June 23 through August 1. Each 45-minute appointment will be conducted by phone or videoconference with a school psychologist or social worker.
High school students can also receive virtual therapy at no cost for concerns involving anxiety, grief, motivation, mood or behavioral changes, bullying, social skills, family and peer relationships, fears and academic stress.
A guardian or designated school employee can make a referral. Families may call 571-749-2940 or contact a school counselor, social worker, psychologist or director of Student Services.
The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board offers additional youth services, including individual and family counseling, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, medication-assisted treatment and other intensive or recovery services. Immunizations Required Before Fall
Students entering seventh grade must receive one dose each of the Tdap booster, meningococcal MenACWY vaccine and human papillomavirus vaccine before school begins.
The Tdap dose must have been administered at age 7 or older, while the MenACWY dose must have been given at age 10 or older. Parents and guardians may opt their children out of the HPV vaccine without submitting documentation to the school.
Students entering 12th grade must receive a MenACWY dose administered at age 16 or older.
Families are encouraged to arrange vaccinations early because summer can be busy for health care providers. Immunization clinics and other resources are available through FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department.
School Board Seeks Facilities Advisers
The Fairfax County School Board is accepting applications for the Facilities Planning Advisory Council from potential Braddock District, Franconia District, Mount Vernon District and at-large McDaniel members.
The council advises FCPS employees and the School Board as they develop comprehensive, long-term plans for school facilities.
