Eight large dogs found new homes during Fairfax County’s 2025 Chief vs. Chief Adoption Bowl, turning a friendly competition between two chiefs into a four-day adoption push with a lasting result.

The event ran from Thursday, Feb. 6, through Sunday, Feb. 9, at both Fairfax County Animal Shelter locations: the Michael R. Frey Campus and the Lorton Campus. During that period, the shelters waived adoption fees for dogs weighing 45 pounds or more.

Chief Kevin Davis finished the contest with five adoptions, while Chief Butler recorded three. That tally gave Team Davis the victory in the 2025 competition.

The final score, however, was only one part of the event’s outcome. By the time the Adoption Bowl ended on Sunday, eight eligible dogs had left the county shelters for new homes.

The promotion focused attention on the shelters’ larger dogs while removing adoption fees for four days, giving prospective owners an added opportunity to bring one home.
