An electrical event involving rooftop solar panels sparked a house fire in Reston on Sunday, August 3, causing an estimated $60,527 in damage.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department crews responded to the 2300 block of Colts Brook Drive around 6 p.m. and arrived to find flames coming from the home’s solar panels. Firefighters contained the blaze to the roof.
Residents said they heard a loud noise inside the house and then discovered smoke rising from the roof. They safely evacuated before crews arrived.
Smoke alarms were installed throughout the home but did not activate because the fire remained outside and was isolated to the rooftop panels.
No residents or firefighters were injured. The occupants were allowed to return to the home after the fire was extinguished.
