Nearly two weeks after a gas leak triggered a home explosion in the Centreville area, the last displaced families could soon be allowed home. The number of evacuated residences has fallen to 19, with officials expecting those households to receive clearance as early as late Thursday night or Friday morning.

A recreational-contact advisory for the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to end Monday. The restriction followed a ruptured sewer line that released more than 240 million gallons of raw sewage and wastewater. Boating, fishing and shoreline play for dogs may resume, though swimming remains prohibited in D.C. waters.

Freedom Financial Holdings Inc., the parent company of Freedom Bank of Virginia, will move its corporate headquarters from Fairfax City to 1750 Tysons Blvd. next month and open a branch there. President and CEO Joe Thomas said the company’s longtime location at 10555 Main Street will remain the bank’s headquarters, branch and operations center.

Drivers should prepare for lane closures on the northbound and southbound I-395 general-purpose lanes and the 395 Express Lanes at Edsall Road, Route 648 at Exit 2. Weather permitting, the closures will occur Friday night, Feb. 27; Saturday, Feb. 28; and Sunday morning, March 1, while crews perform bridge work.

Fairfax County police are investigating eight home burglaries reported over the past two months that targeted Asian American residents. About $500,000 in cash and property was reportedly stolen, including jewelry, clothing, handbags and gold bars.

A Virginia bill defining “shall” in state law as mandatory rather than advisory has gained support. Del. Karrie Delaney, a Fairfax Democrat and the patron of HB1299, said court rulings that treated the word as nonbinding prompted the legislation.

More than 300,000 federal employees have departed through firings, layoffs and resignations since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis has promoted Alaina Gertz to director of communications. Gertz joined the department in 2023 and had served as deputy communications director. She previously handled media relations for Washington, D.C.’s police department during events including the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Nationals’ 2019 World Series championship celebrations.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended approval Feb. 25 of a proposal to add a car wash at Radley Acura in Bailey’s Crossroads. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hold a hearing March 17.

Friday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies, a high near 53 degrees and calm winds becoming southerly at about 5 mph during the afternoon. The evening should be mostly clear, with a low around 38 and south winds of 3 to 6 mph.
