The D.C. region could face extreme heat from Thursday, July 2, through Saturday, July 4, as a powerful and expansive area of high pressure develops. The National Weather Service has placed the area within a broad zone of extreme heat risk during that period.
In Burke, families are beginning a lengthy recovery after powerful storms struck Monday night. Several homes on Winford Court suffered significant damage, displacing some residents while cleanup continues.

Fairfax County Public Schools honored several employees at its 2026 Honors ceremony earlier this month. Bailey’s Upper Elementary School assistant principal Tricia Wayland was named Outstanding School-Based Leader. Other recipients included Mosaic Elementary School teacher Amanda Blevins, Langley High School teacher Scott McCormick and Bucknell Elementary School principal Rashida Green.
The Tysons Carnival is continuing at Lerner Town Square near Tysons Galleria after opening last week. Its attractions include a Ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl and carousel. The carnival is scheduled to remain through Sunday, June 28, with a buy-one, get-one ride-credit promotion available Thursday.
Two cast members from the musical “Suffs” met several hundred fans at the Workhouse Arts Center. Gwynne Wood, who portrays Lucy Burns at the National Theatre, and understudy Gretchen Shope answered questions beneath a tent beside the Lorton Prison Museum. The museum documents the suffragists imprisoned there in 1917 after picketing the White House for women’s voting rights.
