Fairfax County residents face potentially dangerous heat Thursday as allegations of hate incidents at a Vienna middle school prompt renewed concern.
Temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees, with heat index values as high as 104. Mostly sunny conditions are forecast, followed by a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low near 73 and a 30% chance of storms.
At Thoreau Middle School, a Northern Virginia father said two classmates allegedly targeted his daughter with drawings of swastikas. He came forward after learning about another student at the school who reported being repeatedly called the N-word and having water dumped on his head.
In Congress, the Republican-controlled House narrowly approved an immigration enforcement funding package worth roughly $70 billion on Tuesday. The funding would continue through the end of President Donald Trump’s term.
Rep. James Walkinshaw of Fairfax County said Democrats unsuccessfully sought provisions limiting face coverings and establishing body-camera requirements and clearer use-of-force standards.
Several Metrobus routes will be detoured beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday because of road closures connected to the Freedom250 UFC event. The changes will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Monday and will affect routes including the F19 Mount Vernon Estate Express between southeastern Fairfax County and Washington. The fight is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, on the White House lawn.
The Justice Department on Tuesday urged a federal judge to reject a lawsuit seeking to block the event. The Public Integrity Project filed the case over the weekend on behalf of a Virginia political activist and Vietnam veteran.
Elsewhere in the region, DC Water crews are repairing another damaged portion of the Potomac Interceptor after discovering corrosion and broken supports Tuesday in Potomac, Maryland. The newly identified damage is separate from the section that collapsed in January and caused a major sewage spill into the Potomac River.
A colorful interactive artwork has arrived in Annandale. Community Art for Everyone installed the “Conversation Bench” on June 8 at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space, 7200 Columbia Pike. Part of the Art in Daily Spaces project, the piece features two connected pink-and-blue chairs facing opposite directions with a glass screen between them.
In Fairfax City, a plan to replace four Chain Bridge Road office buildings with a mixed-use development advanced through another stage of review Monday. The proposal, discussed at a Planning Commission work session, includes apartments, offices, retail space and structured parking.
The Fairfax County Health Department’s West Springfield Public Health Center will provide its final day of client services Friday, June 12. Services from the center in the Cary Building at 8136 Old Keene Mill Road are being transferred to the Franconia-Springfield Public Health Center.
Seven fourth graders from Forestville Elementary School in Great Falls are also celebrating a third-place finish at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. The competition, held May 27-30 at Iowa State University, brought together 54 teams from eight countries for challenges requiring creative solutions to technical problems.
