Fairfax Connector will return to full weekday service Friday, Jan. 30, for the first time since Saturday, Jan. 24, though lingering road conditions will keep some buses on snow detours.
Routes 151, 152, 161, 162, 231, 232, 310, 321, 322, 334, 703, 803 and 937 will begin the morning on modified paths. The detours are expected to remain until conditions improve.
Memorials honor Potomac crash victims
Alexandria plans to create a memorial for the 67 people killed in the midair collision over the Potomac River one year ago Thursday. A bench, newly planted trees and a plaque listing every victim will be installed along the waterfront in the northeastern portion of Rivergate Park.
Northern Virginia’s skating community also commemorated the victims this week. Ashburn figure skater Alexis Winch, who was friends with 14-year-old victim Everly Livingston, joined several peers for a tribute skate Tuesday at Ashburn Ice House following a sculpture-unveiling ceremony.
Virginia voting rule partly overturned
A federal judge in Richmond partially struck down Virginia’s felony disenfranchisement rule earlier in January. The ruling could restore voting eligibility to hundreds of thousands of people and carry broader implications across the South.
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones is expected to make a public announcement about the case this week.
Jones also joined attorneys general from 21 other jurisdictions Thursday in condemning the U.S. Department of Justice’s effort to make federal cooperation with Minnesota conditional on the state providing sensitive data and abandoning certain public-safety policies. The coalition characterized the federal action as unconstitutional overreach.
Fairfax athlete heads to Olympics
Brandon Kim, a 24-year-old Fairfax native, is preparing to make his Olympic debut in Italy next month. Kim first encountered short-track speedskating on television while watching the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Paid-leave proposals return
Virginia lawmakers are renewing efforts to broaden access to paid leave.
House Bill 5, introduced by Del. Kelly Convirs-Fowler of Virginia Beach, would extend paid sick leave to all public- and private-sector employees in Virginia. Workers would accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked.
Sen. Jennifer Boysko, whose district includes Reston, Herndon, Great Falls and McLean, has separately proposed legislation establishing paid family and medical leave.
Oakton golf range earns national recognition
Oakmont Golf Center in Oakton has been named one of America’s top 50 public golf ranges for the fourth consecutive year.
The Fairfax County Park Authority owns and operates the facility, which has 78 lighted stations. Thirty of those stations are covered and heated.
Public hearings and license notice
Public hearings on the fiscal 2027 budget are scheduled for Feb. 10, with an overflow session planned for Feb. 11.
A separate legal notice concerns an application for a restaurant license allowing beer and wine sales for consumption both on and off the premises.

Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 21 degrees. A northwest wind around 6 mph could push wind chills as low as minus 1.
Friday night will be mostly cloudy with a low near 9 and similarly frigid wind chills. Calm conditions will give way to a north wind of about 6 mph after midnight.
