Fairfax County will open applications for nine affordable senior housing properties, giving older adults a limited window to seek placement on apartment waitlists.

The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority will accept applications from 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19.

The selected properties participate in the Project Based Voucher program, which uses federal subsidies to pay part of a tenant’s monthly rent. Applicants may select multiple properties through the county’s online Rent Café portal.

At five communities, every household member must be at least 62:

  • The Lodge at Autumn Willow, 13175 Autumn Willow Drive near Centreville, offers one- and two-bedroom apartments.
  • Herndon Harbor House offers one-bedroom apartments on Grace Street and Jorss Place in Herndon.
  • Lindsay Hill Senior Housing, 8915 Pink Carnation Court in Lorton, has one- and two-bedroom apartments.
  • North Hill Senior Residences, 7245 Nightingale Lane in Hybla Valley, offers two-bedroom apartments in a development that opened in 2023.
  • Oakwood Meadow Senior Residences, 5815 South Van Dorn Street in Rose Hill, has one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Four other properties require only the head of household to be 62 or older:

  • Coppermine Place II, 13395 Coppermine Road in the Frying Pan area south of Herndon, offers two-bedroom apartments.
  • Lake Anne House, 11444 North Shore Drive in Reston, has efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments. Its new building opened following redevelopment in 2022.
  • Belmont at One University, 4518 University Drive near Fairfax City, offers two-bedroom apartments.
  • Lincolnia Senior Apartments, 4710 N. Chambliss Street in Lincolnia, has efficiency and studio apartments.

Applications submitted during the enrollment period will have an equal chance of being randomly selected for a waitlist. Placement does not guarantee an apartment.

When a unit becomes available, waitlisted households will be contacted and screened. Eligibility will depend on income, household size and the size of the available unit. Applicants cannot already receive other federal rental housing assistance.
