Fairfax County Seeks Foster Parents as Hundreds Need Care

Fairfax County Foster Care and Adoption will host two community events aimed at building support for children in foster care and recruiting more foster parents.

Fairfax County Foster Care and Adoption will host two community events aimed at building support for children in foster care and recruiting more foster parents.

The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lorton Library. A second session will take place Tuesday, May 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Burke Centre Library.

Virginia had 5,482 children in foster care in February 2025, including 247 in Fairfax County, according to state social services figures. Officials say more foster parents are needed to provide safe, caring temporary homes while children cannot live with their families of origin.

Fairfax County social workers, current foster parents and community partners will explain how the foster care system works, discuss local needs and share ways residents can help. Attendees can also learn the steps required to become foster parents and ask questions about the experience.

Both people who are considering fostering and those who are simply curious are welcome. Participants may drop in or register online in advance.
