Two landmark collective bargaining agreements with the Fairfax Education Unions were unanimously ratified Jan. 9, bringing new pay, leave and workplace provisions to county school employees.
The agreements cover the Licensed Instructional Unit and Operational Unit and will take effect July 1, 2025.
Salary scales will receive a 7% market adjustment in fiscal 2026. In fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028, employees are set to receive a 3% market adjustment and a step increase.
A new step will also be added to the top of every salary scale in each of those two fiscal years.
Teachers will receive a minimum 30-minute planning block, and extended-day contracts for special education teachers will continue. Employees will also gain three bereavement days separate from sick leave.
The contracts establish a Health Care Advisory Committee to consider more affordable health care plans.
Board Chair and Providence District representative Karl Frisch said the agreements recognize educators’ sacrifices and move the school system toward greater equity. He also connected supported and respected educators with stronger outcomes for students.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid said the contracts give employees a voice in major decisions affecting the school division’s mission. She called their approval a historic step toward collaborative, student-centered decision-making.
