Fairfax Elementary Schools Scrap Two April Early-Release Days

Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled its two elementary early-release days scheduled for April, giving students full days of instruction instead.

Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled its two elementary early-release days scheduled for April, giving students full days of instruction instead.

Elementary students will remain in class until the regular dismissal time on Wednesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 29.

The change follows the announcement of a special election on Tuesday, April 21. Many FCPS schools will serve as polling locations, so schools will be closed to students that day. April 21 will instead become a teacher workday and staff development day.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid said the revised calendar also accounts for previous weather-related cancellations and delays. Moving staff planning, collaboration and professional learning to April 21 preserves instructional time on the two following Wednesdays.

FCPS acknowledged that the schedule change could affect family routines and asked families for flexibility.
