Fairfax Farmers Markets Return With a Plastic-Bag Ban

Fairfax County’s farmers market season is underway, bringing fresh produce and other local goods to 10 locations—and eliminating plastic bags from the markets in 2025.

Fairfax County’s farmers market season is underway, bringing fresh produce and other local goods to 10 locations—and eliminating plastic bags from the markets in 2025.

The McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market opened the season April 16, followed by Burke on April 19 and Reston on April 26. Shoppers are being reminded to bring reusable bags and containers.

Scott and Laura Morton were among those browsing the Reston market. Scott said reducing plastic consumption could help limit carbon footprints and keep debris out of landfills and oceans.

The couple had already spotted ingredients for a meal.

“We saw some asparagus that really caught our eye and some fresh shrimp,” Scott said. “We want to do some stir-fry.”

More Fairfax County Park Authority markets are scheduled to open in May. Annandale and Herndon open May 1, followed by McLean and Kingstowne on May 2. Lorton begins operations May 4, while Oakmont and Wakefield open May 7.

Five locations—Mount Vernon, Annandale, Lorton, Reston and Wakefield—accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
