Fairfax County Public Library surpassed 4 million digital checkouts in a single year for the first time on Dec. 22, 2025, reaching a milestone nearly two decades after introducing its online catalog.
The record includes eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines borrowed through Libby by OverDrive, which the library system began offering in 2006.
The 4 millionth checkout was the eAudiobook Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family, and Social Class by Rob Henderson.
Digital borrowing peaked on Dec. 2, the system’s busiest day of 2025, when cardholders recorded 15,268 loans.
Fairfax County Public Library ranks No. 22 nationwide in digital circulation among standalone library systems and No. 1 in Virginia. In 2024, just 29 library systems using OverDrive exceeded 4 million digital checkouts.
Since the service’s introduction in 2006, Fairfax County library cardholders have borrowed nearly 30 million digital items.
