Fairfax County Public Library launched a new logo and visual identity in September 2025, marking Library Card Sign-Up Month with a look centered on imagination, discovery and community connection.

The library cautioned that updating branch displays and other materials would take several months.

As part of the rollout, FCPL invited artists of all ages to submit designs for new children’s and adult library cards. The contest ran from Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, 2025, with submissions closing at 8 a.m. Oct. 1.

Entries had to incorporate the library’s new logo and work across card, key-tag and bookmark templates. Original designs were accepted as PDF, PNG or JPG files, while photographs and artwork created using artificial intelligence were excluded.

Artists also had to use images they owned or could help secure the rights to use. Although the competition was open to everyone, digital design experience was expected to help entrants meet the technical requirements.

A committee of library and Fairfax Library Foundation staff was tasked with selecting the winning designs. Each winner was eligible for a $500 prize from the foundation, with notifications scheduled by Oct. 31, 2025.

Library employees could enter but were not eligible to receive prize money if their work was selected.
