A City of Fairfax police officer shot and critically injured a person reportedly armed with a knife shortly after midnight on July 11 at the Wawa at 9700 Fairfax Boulevard, according to police.
Officers responded to the store at approximately 12:07 a.m. after a report of a person armed with a knife. Police said they found the person holding a knife near the store’s front door and ordered them to drop it. When the person did not comply and exited the store with the knife in hand, officers followed them outside.
An officer then fired a department-issued gun, striking the person. Officers provided medical aid at the scene until emergency personnel arrived. The injured person was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police reported that no officers or bystanders were injured in the encounter.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
The injured person’s identity has not been released. The investigation remains ongoing, and the circumstances surrounding the encounter could change as additional evidence becomes available.
