The Fairfax County School Board found Superintendent Michelle C. Reid in compliance with the division’s financial-planning guardrails during its Oct. 9, 2025, regular meeting, while several major issues—including K-12 start times—were introduced for future action.

Reid presented the annual monitoring report for Executive Limitation 5, which governs financial planning within Fairfax County Public Schools. The board approved the 2025-26 school year report and voted to retain the policy as written in the Strategic Governance Manual.

The board took no action on other business during the meeting, but formally introduced several items expected to return for future votes. They include next steps for K-12 start times, the Strategic Plan Goal 1 report covering a strong start from pre-K through grade 12, an ADA playground installation contract for Union Mill Elementary School and policies forwarded by the Governance Committee.

Reid also presented an Academic Matters update on the FCPS Future Ready Index and a strategic plan overview of the division’s Design and Construction Services.

Before the regular meeting, the board held a 6:30 p.m. public hearing on FCPS’ 2025 biennial Virginia Department of Education Comprehensive Plan. Local school boards must adopt a divisionwide, unified long-range plan every two years to improve classroom instruction and student achievement. Two people testified during the hearing.

The regular meeting began at 7 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a National Anthem performance by the West Potomac High School Guitar Ensemble under the direction of Schuyler Kieley.

Board members approved proclamations recognizing Indigenous People’s Day and Native American Heritage Month, as well as LGBTQIA+ History Month. Nine people spoke during community participation, and student representative Faith Mekonen delivered her report.

Through its consent agenda, the board approved minutes from the Sept. 25 meeting, additional advisory committee appointments and several contracts.

Reid later delivered superintendent matters. Mr. Frisch reported on the Administration Committee, while Ms. St. John-Cunning provided an update from the Successful Children and Youth Policy Team.

Dr. Anderson, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Dixit, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Frisch, Ms. Lady, Mr. McDaniel, Mr. McElveen, Ms. Meren and Ms. St. John-Cunning offered remarks during board matters.

The meeting adjourned at 10:26 p.m. Upcoming meetings included a Governance Committee meeting at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 and a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.
