The Fairfax County School Board declared the former Clifton Elementary School building uninhabitable and directed the superintendent to prepare for its demolition during a June 26, 2025, regular meeting.
The building at 7010 Clifton Road will also undergo associated site cleanup under revised Policy 8258, which covers building evaluation, renovation and infrastructure maintenance.
Before committing money to the project, the superintendent must return to the board with a funding plan and a general layout for the site. The plan must be presented in time to comply with the policy’s required schedule. If that deadline cannot be met, the superintendent must ask the board for an extension.
The board also revised its Strategic Governance Manual’s rules for proclamations, awarded George Mason University a new intergovernmental contract for the Early Identification Program and approved minutes from the May 20 Budget Committee meeting.
Students and championship teams recognized
The meeting began at 7 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a performance of the national anthem by South Lakes High School student Jocelyn Looney.
Board members approved proclamations honoring the Quander family, Fairfax County Public Schools participants in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, International Women in Engineering Day and FCPS National Merit Scholarship winners.
The board also recognized five Virginia High School League team champions from spring 2025:
- Herndon High School boys soccer
- Langley High School boys tennis
- Robinson Secondary School film
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology girls tennis
- West Potomac High School boys lacrosse
Seven people addressed the board during the public participation portion of the meeting. Megan Sawant delivered Student Representative Matters for the final time.
Other board business
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented an Academic Matters report about Portrait of a Graduate and later delivered Superintendent Matters.
Through its consent agenda, the board adopted minutes from its June 12 meeting, awarded several contracts and approved appointments and reappointments to the Board of Trustees of the Educational Employees’ Retirement System for Fairfax County.
It also approved the appointment of the individual trustee to the Educational Employees’ Supplementary Retirement System board, the Monthly Employee Separation Report, the Biennial Division Literacy Plan and Policy 2745 governing commencement activities.
Kyle McElveen reported on the Audit Committee, Rachna Sizemore Heizer Lady reported on the Governance Committee and Seema Dixit St. John-Cunning reported on the Public Engagement Committee. Board members St. John-Cunning, Lady, Moon, Sizemore Heizer, Ricardy Anderson, McElveen, Dixit, Meren and Frisch delivered closing remarks.
The meeting adjourned at 10:25 p.m.
Upcoming meetings were scheduled for July 3 at 7 p.m. for the Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee, followed by regular meetings at 7 p.m. on July 10 and July 17.
