The Fairfax County School Board elected new leaders for the 2025-26 school year during a July 10 organizational meeting that started late because unforeseen circumstances affected the member quorum.
The regular meeting began at 7:31 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a performance of the national anthem by Mount Vernon High School student Juliet Pascoe. Chair Karl Frisch said the delay also required the agenda to be reorganized.
Springfield District representative Sandy Anderson was elected chair, while Dranesville District representative Robyn Lady was chosen as vice chair. The board also approved its organizational arrangements and appointments for the new school year.
Faith Mekonen was welcomed as the board’s 55th student representative and delivered Student Representative Matters for the first time. One person addressed the board during community participation, and Superintendent Michelle Reid also delivered her regular report.
The board issued proclamations honoring outstanding Fairfax County Public Schools employees for 2025 and recognizing members of the Virginia School Boards Association Business Honor Roll.
Reid presented the annual monitoring report for Executive Limitation 2, which governs emergency superintendent succession. The board found her in compliance, approved the 2025-26 monitoring report and voted to retain the policy as written in its Strategic Governance Manual.
The report opened the superintendent’s scheduled series of executive-limitation monitoring reports and Strategic Plan goal updates for the 2025-26 school year.
Other presentations covered WIDA academic progress, FCPS graduations in 2025 and the fiscal 2025 year-end financial review. Chief Financial Officer Leigh Burden joined Reid for the financial presentation.
On its consent agenda, the board approved committee and regular-meeting minutes, a state technology grant reimbursement resolution and policies covering programs for students with disabilities and student lists. It retired a policy addressing students with physically aggressive or violent behavior.
Members also awarded several contracts, approved the fiscal 2026 risk assessment and audit topics, and endorsed the Governor’s School designation for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.
The board skipped its usual Board Matters segment and adjourned at 11:29 p.m. Its next regular meeting was scheduled for July 17, 2025, at 7 p.m.
