The Fairfax County School Board approved a resolution on June 12 asking the Board of Supervisors to place a $460 million school bond referendum before voters in the November 2025 general election.

If approved by the supervisors and county voters, the bonds are expected to fund future phases of ongoing construction efforts and other projects in Fairfax County Public Schools’ Capital Improvement Program. The School Board approved the latest five-year plan, covering fiscal years 2026 through 2030, on February 6, 2025.

School Board Chair and Providence District representative Karl Frisch said school facilities directly affect learning, student well-being and academic achievement. He expressed support for advancing the referendum as an investment in FCPS’ future.

The division’s buildings also serve as community gathering places. FCPS hosts approximately 500,000 community events annually, often providing space at no cost to homeowners associations, camps, 4-H and scouting organizations, government agencies, and cultural and civic groups.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid said the proposal is intended to improve the environments where students learn, develop and connect, creating better conditions for academic success while benefiting the wider Fairfax community.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the proposed referendum in June. Its approval is required before the measure can appear on the November ballot.
