The Fairfax County School Board approved a solar power contract covering 15 elementary schools during its April 24, 2025, regular meeting. Members also adopted new social studies instructional resources and approved a report on innovation goals for the school system.
The meeting began at 7 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a National Anthem performance by the Spring Hill Elementary School Strings, directed by Margot Mezvinsky. The board then approved a proclamation honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Winter teams and ensembles honored
The board recognized Virginia High School League teams and selected performing arts ensembles for their achievements during winter 2025:
- Chantilly High School boys swim and dive
- Chantilly High School speech
- Cooper Middle School Symphonic Band
- Lake Braddock Secondary School gymnastics
- South County High School girls indoor track and field
- South Lakes High School boys basketball
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Scholastic Bowl
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Symphonic Wind Ensemble
- West Springfield High School boys indoor track and field
- West Springfield High School Wind Symphony
Six people addressed the board during the community participation period. Student representative Megan Sawant also delivered a report.
Innovation plan and other business
Superintendent Michelle Reid presented the Strategic Plan Goal 5 report, “Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation,” which the board approved for the 2024-25 school year.
The school system uses recurring goal reports to measure progress across its five strategic priorities and identify work planned for the coming year. Each report moves through a written draft, a board work session and a final public presentation.
Reid also delivered an Academic Matters presentation about Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID.
As part of its consent agenda, the board approved minutes from its March 13 meeting, the monthly employee separation report and several contracts. Members also adopted policies covering multi-agency placements for children with disabilities, operational guidelines for school libraries and controversial issues.
Sandy Sizemore Heizer reported on the Budget Committee, while Kyle Dunne provided an update from the Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee. Reid presented superintendent matters, and several board members offered closing remarks.
The meeting adjourned at 10:43 p.m.
Upcoming meetings included an Audit Committee meeting on April 28, a Governance Committee meeting on April 29, a work session on May 6 and a regular meeting on May 8.
