Fairfax County Public Schools will dismiss students three hours early Monday as potentially severe storms, including possible tornadoes, approach the region.
All afterschool and evening activities on school grounds have been canceled. Morning preschool and special education classes are expected to dismiss around 10 a.m.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout the day, with more rain and a possible thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Some storms could become severe. Temperatures may reach 72 degrees before plunging to around 30 overnight. The chance of precipitation is 80%.
Lawsuit Planned After Centreville Explosion
An attorney representing an 83-year-old man plans to sue Washington Gas after an explosion destroyed the man’s Quail Pond Court home in Centreville.
The blast injured and displaced the homeowner and forced approximately 50 neighborhood residents to evacuate.
Potomac Interceptor Flow Restored
D.C. Water has restored flow to the Potomac Interceptor after completing emergency repairs and conducting a series of tests early Saturday.
Environmental rehabilitation remains underway along the C&O Canal.
Virginia Session Ends Without Budget Deal
Virginia lawmakers adjourned the 2026 General Assembly’s regular session Saturday evening without reaching a budget agreement after an unexpected dispute over data center tax breaks.
The standoff overshadowed an otherwise consequential session for Democrats, who control both legislative chambers and all three statewide offices.
Lawmakers did pass legislation establishing recreational cannabis sales for adults 21 and older beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Gov. Abigail Spanberger is expected to sign the measure, five years after Virginia decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Southwest to End Dulles Service
Southwest Airlines will stop serving Dulles International Airport on June 4 as part of a broader adjustment to its operations.
The airline currently offers Dulles flights to Phoenix and Denver. It will also withdraw from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on the same date.
Falls Church Opens Door to E-Scooters
The Falls Church City Council unanimously approved a one-year pilot program that could bring as many as 100 shared e-scooters and electric bicycles to the 2.2-square-mile city.
Officials must now find companies willing to participate in the program.
Regional Job Losses Raise Concern
Private-sector job losses connected to federal reductions and economic uncertainty are emerging as a major concern for Alexandria and neighboring jurisdictions, according to a March 10 presentation to the Alexandria City Council.
Brookings Institution fellow Tracy Hadden Loh said the region continues to add private-sector positions in some subsectors, while others have lost jobs.
A new administrative plan is also available for public review. A hearing is scheduled for May 1, 2026, and public comments are invited.
