Fairfax County Public Schools is pairing specialized English-language instruction with standard classroom lessons to help multilingual students strengthen their academic skills and confidence.
The approach supports students who enter FCPS speaking a language other than English. Rather than treating their existing language abilities as a limitation, the school system says its curriculum builds on those strengths while helping learners develop the academic English needed for school, college, careers, and daily life.
During the Strategic Plan Update at the Fairfax County School Board’s April 9 meeting, Dr. Reid presented a video highlighting the district’s English-language development curriculum for multilingual learners. The featured students described their progress as going “up and up” toward a brighter future.
FCPS says the support is designed to have an impact beyond academic achievement. Learning in an unfamiliar language can be difficult at first, but gaining new skills can help students become more self-confident. The process also allows them to retain the lifelong benefits of multilingualism while preparing for future opportunities.
