The Fairfax County School Board approved a five-year capital improvement plan on February 12 that calls for new schools, major renovations and added classroom capacity across the division.

The fiscal year 2027–31 Capital Improvement Program serves as a working budget document outlining the projected timing and cost of school construction, additions and building upgrades. The plan is intended to modernize aging facilities while responding to enrollment projections and long-term infrastructure needs.

New construction funding includes the upcoming Dunn Loring Elementary School. The program also covers planning and design for Silver Line Elementary School and modifications to Skyview High School, formerly known as western high school.

Renovation projects are planned for Bonnie Brae, Bren Mar Park, Brookfield, Armstrong, Willow Springs, Herndon, Dranesville and Cub Run elementary schools.

The plan also anticipates renovations at Union Mill, Centre Ridge and Poplar Tree elementary schools; Franklin and Twain middle schools; and Centreville High School.

Other investments will address student growth through capacity upgrades and the continued use of modular classrooms where needed.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid said the program balances facility demands with fiscal responsibility while supporting instruction, performances and community events.

FCPS facilities host about 500,000 community events each year. Homeowners associations, 4-H and scouting groups, county employee organizations, and cultural and civic groups are among those that may use school spaces at no cost.

The capital program supports priorities in the division’s 2023–30 Strategic Plan, including educational quality, community engagement and sustainable investment in facilities.

FCPS capital projects are financed through bond referendums approved by Fairfax County voters.
