Fairfax County Public Schools will move ahead with new schools, extensive renovations and capacity upgrades under a five-year capital plan approved by the School Board on February 12.

The fiscal year 2027-31 Capital Improvement Program outlines the expected timing and costs of projects across the school division. The plan is intended to modernize aging buildings, address enrollment and capacity needs, and improve school security and accessibility.

New construction plans include the upcoming Dunn Loring Elementary School. The program also provides for planning and design work on Silver Line Elementary School and modifications to Skyview High School, formerly known as western high school.

The division’s renovation list includes Bonnie Brae, Bren Mar Park, Brookfield, Armstrong, Willow Springs, Herndon, Dranesville and Cub Run elementary schools.

Additional renovations are planned for Union Mill, Centre Ridge and Poplar Tree elementary schools; Franklin and Twain middle schools; and Centreville High School.

The capital program also calls for capacity improvements in areas experiencing student growth. Modular classrooms will continue to be used when necessary.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid said the plan balances the school system’s facility needs with fiscal responsibility while supporting academics, performances and community events.

FCPS facilities host approximately 500,000 community events each year. Homeowners associations, 4-H and scouting groups, county employee organizations, and cultural and civic groups are among those that may use the spaces, often without charge.

The program supports the goals of the division’s 2023-30 Strategic Plan and incorporates long-term enrollment forecasts and infrastructure planning. FCPS capital projects are financed through bond referendums approved by Fairfax County voters.
