Fairfax County voters could decide in November whether to authorize $460 million in bonds for school construction and improvement projects.
At its June 12 meeting, the county’s elected education board approved a resolution asking the Board of Supervisors to place the proposed referendum on the November 2025 general election ballot. Supervisors were scheduled to vote on the request later in June.
If authorized by supervisors and voters, the funding would support upcoming phases of ongoing projects and other work in Fairfax County Public Schools’ fiscal year 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program, which received approval Feb. 6, 2025.
Board Chair and Providence District Representative Karl Frisch said the condition of school facilities directly affects learning, student well-being and academic success. He expressed hope that county supervisors would back the referendum.
Superintendent Michelle Reid said improving the places where students learn, grow and connect would help create the conditions for long-term success across the community.
FCPS buildings also host about 500,000 community events annually. Space is often provided at no cost to homeowners associations, camps, 4-H and scouting organizations, government agencies, and cultural and civic groups.
