Fairfax County Public Schools will open on time Monday, Feb. 9, after crews made enough progress clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and bus stops. School officials said a countywide inspection over the weekend showed conditions had improved sufficiently for schools and offices to resume their regular schedules.
City of Fairfax police are investigating after a group of children reported that a man followed them while they walked home from school Thursday, Feb. 5. The students said they first noticed him in Van Dyck Park and later saw him in their neighborhood. He was described as wearing black winter clothing.
Fairfax County police have identified the driver killed in a four-vehicle crash on Braddock Road as Dariush Bakhtiani, 57, of Centreville. Investigators believe Bakhtiani struck a police cruiser, triggering a series of rear-end collisions among vehicles stopped at a red light. He was taken to a hospital and later died.
Virginia health officials are warning of a possible measles exposure involving a preschool-age child who traveled through Reagan National Airport and rode a Yellow Line Metro train. The out-of-state child passed through the airport Jan. 26. Virginia has reported six measles cases so far this year.
Housing legislation that could permit apartment buildings, townhouses and mixed-use projects by right in some commercial corridors has cleared the Virginia Senate. The bills are among several proposals intended to increase the state’s housing supply and now head to the governor.
The Pennino human services building will remain closed for at least a week following flooding caused by a broken water line Friday, Feb. 6. The building houses Fairfax County family, neighborhood and human services agencies. Anyone with an appointment there should contact the appropriate agency to reschedule.
Police are also investigating a Centreville home burglary on the 13900 block of Big Yankee Lane. A neighbor alerted the resident, and surveillance footage showed two men forcing their way through the back door around 8:46 p.m. Jan. 23. Officers responded to the report at 11:25 a.m. the following day. Two firearms appear to have been stolen, and police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Tysons-based Strategy Inc. recorded its largest quarterly loss ever, taking a $12.4 billion write-down on its bitcoin holdings during the fourth quarter. The loss largely erased the company’s 2025 profits, but the business formerly called MicroStrategy continued buying cryptocurrency, acquiring more than 41,000 bitcoins in January.
Texas-based Indian restaurant Dum ‘N Grill is planning a national expansion that includes locations in Loudoun and Fairfax counties. The company is working toward opening a restaurant at Tysons Corner Center.
