Fairfax County Public Schools finalized its $150 million purchase of the former King Abdullah Academy property in Herndon on Friday, Aug. 15, securing a major new campus for western Fairfax County.
The Fairfax County School Board approved the purchase and sale agreement on June 12. The deal includes nearly 33 acres of land, the existing school building, furniture, technology and equipment.
School officials estimate the acquisition will save approximately $280 million. Buying land and constructing a new school in the area would cost more than $430 million under current estimates.
The property contains 325,000 square feet of modern educational space. Its facilities include large multipurpose halls, libraries, study rooms, fine arts areas and athletic space that could support expanded instructional opportunities.
Because the purchase closed shortly before the start of the school year and the campus requires additional planning, the division does not expect to use the property fully until the 2026-27 school year.
