Fairfax County entered the new year with an office market in transition, rising respiratory illness, a damaging Great Falls house fire and impending Silver Line disruptions.
The county’s office sector remains soft and uncertain, but signs suggest it may be stabilizing or beginning to tighten. Demand continues to favor Class A and trophy properties as tenants leave aging buildings for newer spaces with improved amenities.
Three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries during a two-alarm house fire Thursday morning in the 11100 block of Rich Meadow Drive in Great Falls. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames at the rear of the home spreading into the attic. Two civilians and one firefighter were evaluated for injuries.
Respiratory illness activity in the Fairfax County Health District has climbed to its highest level since February, according to Virginia Department of Health data. The flu season is expected to be more severe because of the spread of an Influenza H3N2 mutation called “subclade K” in North America.
Outgoing Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares is facing opposition over his decision to reach an agreement with the Trump administration instead of taking a tuition-aid lawsuit to court. The Legal Aid Justice Center, ACLU of Virginia and Dream Project announced Dec. 31 that they had filed an emergency motion to intervene in the federal case, which targets undocumented and refugee students in Virginia.
In another legal challenge, 15 Virginia health centers announced Tuesday that they are suing the state over alleged underpayments of Medicaid reimbursements. The providers are Federally Qualified Health Centers, nonprofit clinics that receive federal funding.
Virginia lawmakers are also preparing to consider the role of artificial intelligence in education when the 2026 General Assembly session begins in mid-January. Del. Sam Rasoul, a Roanoke Democrat who chairs the House Education Committee, expects potential regulations to address children’s safety and emotional development while examining whether AI improves learning.

Fairfax County Public Library has released its most popular digital and print books of 2025. The system also exceeded 4 million digital checkouts in one calendar year for the first time on Dec. 22. Only 29 libraries using OverDrive’s Libby catalog reached that milestone in 2024.
Silver Line riders should prepare for service changes this weekend, Jan. 3-4. Trains will single-track between McPherson Square and Foggy Bottom and operate every 15 minutes between Ashburn and Clarendon. Silver Line service will not run in Washington, D.C., or Maryland.
