Raul Pedroso, Alexandria’s assistant police chief and former interim chief, will take command of the City of Fairfax Police Department on Aug. 11.

Pedroso brings 32 years of law enforcement experience, including 19 years in executive and senior command positions. He joined the Alexandria Police Department as an assistant chief in 2023 and served as interim chief in 2024.

“Being selected to lead the City of Fairfax Police Department is a great honor,” Pedroso said. “I am excited to get to know agency staff and to meet the city’s residents and business owners. I look forward to continuing the department’s tradition of excellent community service.”

Fairfax selected Pedroso following a national search and an extensive review of candidates. Captain Natalie Hinesley has led the department in an acting capacity since the previous chief retired in January.

City Manager Bryan Foster said Pedroso emerged from a strong field because of his leadership, energy, and dedication to fairness and transparency.

Pedroso began his policing career in Coral Gables, Florida, rising from patrol officer to leadership roles across uniformed patrol, criminal investigations, and professional standards.

During his tenure as Alexandria’s interim chief, Pedroso guided the department through a period of change while working to strengthen relationships among city officials, police personnel, and residents. The department emphasized reducing crime, improving investigations, and building greater collaboration and accountability under his leadership.

Pedroso earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Florida International University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
