Fairfax City will install Raul Pedroso as its new police chief on Aug. 11, placing a veteran law-enforcement leader with 32 years of experience at the helm of the city’s police department.

Pedroso comes to Fairfax after serving in senior leadership roles with the Alexandria Police Department. He said leading the Fairfax department is a “great honor” and that he looks forward to meeting its employees, residents and business owners while continuing its tradition of community service.

The city selected Pedroso following a nationwide search that attracted a deep pool of applicants. City Manager Bryan Foster said Pedroso stood out for his leadership, energy, and commitment to fairness and transparency.

Pedroso began his career as a patrol officer in Coral Gables, Florida, and advanced through uniformed patrol, criminal investigations and professional standards. His career includes 19 years in executive and senior command positions.

He became Alexandria’s assistant police chief in October 2023 and held that role until February 2024, when he was appointed interim chief. Pedroso led the department until November 2024 and was considered for the permanent position before Alexandria chose another candidate. He then returned to his assistant chief role.

During his time as interim chief, Pedroso guided Alexandria’s department through a period of change while working to strengthen relationships among city leaders, police personnel and the community. The department emphasized reducing crime, improving investigations, and building greater collaboration and accountability under his leadership.

Pedroso will succeed Erin Schaible, who retired Jan. 3 after nearly five years as Fairfax City’s police chief. Schaible, the first woman to hold the position, joined the city after a 28-year career with Fairfax County police and retired there as a lieutenant colonel in December 2019. Capt. Natalie Hinesley has served as acting chief since Schaible’s departure.

Pedroso holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Florida International University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
