Fairfax County Public Schools has launched ARTiFAX, a new recognition program celebrating teen artists in grades 7 through 12 who are enrolled in the division’s visual arts programs.
The inaugural ARTiFAX Awards honored 299 student-submitted works, reflecting artistic achievement, creative development and individual expression across Fairfax County schools.
Judges evaluated entries in categories covering Artistry, Authentic Voice, Collaborative Artwork, Creative Process, Cultural Context, Emerging Artist, Reflective Voice, Senior Portfolios and Thematic Concept. The range allowed students to be recognized for both technical ability and the ideas and processes behind their work.
Each participating school also selected a “Best In School” recipient, giving individual campuses an opportunity to spotlight standout artists while including them in the countywide program.
Among the recognized works was “Pinning Hopes” by McLean High School student Thomas Chestnut, which received an award in the Cultural Context category. Other winning entries explored subjects including identity, family, tradition, anxiety, memory, personal growth and contemporary life.
The award-winning artwork will be displayed at Northern Virginia Community College’s Ernst Community Cultural Center in Annandale from Feb. 12 through March 13. An ARTiFAX awards ceremony and reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25.
