Falls Church Arts will showcase work by 68 regional artists in “Layers,” an all-media exhibition opening Aug. 16 at its gallery at 700-B W. Broad St. in Falls Church.
The exhibition runs through Sept. 28 and explores how layering can convey memory, transformation, identity and emotion. A free meet-the-artists reception is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, when the Juror’s Choice Award will also be announced.
Artists from Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland contributed photography, paintings, collages, jewelry, fiber art, found-object pieces and sculptures. The show includes work by both emerging and established artists.
Juror Tricia Ratliff said the collection encourages visitors to look beneath the surface and find beauty in complexity. Ratliff, who juried the 2025 Falls Church Arts Plein Air Festival, is trained in classical and contemporary art methods. Her work has been exhibited and collected internationally, and she spent a decade teaching painting and drawing in a classical atelier.
Ratliff continues to lead workshops and has judged numerous exhibitions and competitions. Her own art draws heavily from nature, renewal and resilience, often inspired by time spent painting in unfamiliar places and learning about their communities.
Visitors may vote for the exhibition’s People’s Choice Award at the gallery through Sept. 12.
