A Falls Church dental practice is taking a specialized approach to chronic jaw pain, headaches and disrupted sleep, focusing exclusively on temporomandibular joint disorders, craniofacial pain and sleep-related breathing problems.
Sleep & TMJ Therapy, led by Jeffrey L. Brown, does not provide routine cleanings or cosmetic dentistry. Instead, it serves patients seeking targeted care, including some who have previously visited physicians, neurologists, ear, nose and throat specialists, and general dentists without lasting relief.
Brown graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College and earned his DDS from Georgetown University School of Dentistry. While at Georgetown, he worked with the neurology department on nerve-regeneration research.
After beginning his career in general dentistry, Brown pursued postgraduate education in TMJ disorders, craniofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He has also lectured internationally about TMJ and airway-focused therapies.
The practice uses digital imaging, including three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography scans and airway analysis, to examine jaw position, joint health and airway space. Its evaluations consider connections among the jaw, tongue posture, airway and facial development.
Treatment and diagnostic services include TMJ and TMD therapy, oral appliances for sleep apnea, Advanced Lightwire Functional appliances, modified splints, cold-laser therapy, neuromuscular massage and other soft-tissue support. The office also evaluates childhood facial growth and airway development and offers orthodontic case finishing and non-extraction approaches.
The clinical team includes dental assistants trained in TMD care, a licensed massage therapist who provides targeted soft-tissue treatment and staff members who coordinate patients’ care. The model reflects the practice’s view that jaw and sleep disorders can involve muscular, neurological and respiratory systems—not only teeth.
Patient reviews frequently describe detailed explanations, attentive staff and improvements in jaw pain, headaches, snoring or sleep. Other reviewers have raised concerns about costs, insurance restrictions and the length or complexity of treatment. Results can vary with the severity and causes of a patient’s condition, and some treatment plans require multiple phases and sustained patient participation.
The practice also evaluates children and teenagers for issues involving facial growth, breathing and tongue posture. That work reflects growing interest in how jaw development and airway health may be connected.
Sleep & TMJ Therapy is located at 2841 Hartland Road, Suite 301, in Falls Church. Patients considering an evaluation are encouraged to discuss the proposed treatment, expected timeline, costs and insurance coverage before beginning care.
