My Home Thai Bistro may be one of Falls Church’s newest dining spots, but it has already attracted local attention with an inviting atmosphere, attentive service and a menu that ranges from excellent to underwhelming.
The restaurant opened a few months ago at 1009 W. Broad St. Its sleek, modern dining room is softened by warm wood accents, while bamboo-patterned booth walls depict animals and flowers. Bold pink upholstery completes the distinctive interior.
Service was a strength throughout the meal. Servers checked on the table several times, refilled water promptly and offered guidance about the restaurant’s most popular dishes.
The food, however, was inconsistent.
The $14 Khanom Jeab dumplings were among the better appetizers. Filled with shrimp, pork and carrot and served with sweet black soy sauce, they were substantial without feeling heavy. More seasoning would have helped their somewhat mild flavor. They earned 4.5 out of 5.
The evening’s standout was the $14 Won Ka Bite, which received a perfect 5. Lightly fried wonton wrappers held a creamy mixture of crab sticks and seasoned cream cheese, creating a well-balanced combination of crispness and richness. The only drawback was the small quantity.
The $16 Mini Crispy Treats kids set earned 3 out of 5. Jasmine rice shaped like bears gave the meal an appealing presentation, and both the shrimp cakes and wings were crisp. Still, the food needed more flavor, particularly the wings, which could have benefited from a sauce.
One of the biggest surprises was the $17 Homemade Satay Burger. The grilled, marinated chicken was paired with tomato, red onion and cucumber, producing something far more distinctive than a standard chicken sandwich. Its home fries and peanut mayonnaise were also table favorites, helping the dish earn 4.5 out of 5.
The $25 Quack Quack Noodle Soup also scored 4.5. Crispy duck, thin rice noodles, bean sprouts, scallions and cilantro came together in a homemade duck broth. The comforting dish offered a satisfying mix of flavors and textures, making its popularity easy to understand.
The $18 Pad See Ew received 3.5 out of 5. Its pan-fried wide rice noodles had a texture that may not appeal to everyone, though that preparation is traditional. The egg, Chinese broccoli and homemade sweetened soy sauce delivered impressive flavor, making it a solid choice for diners who already enjoy the dish.
The weakest selection was the $18 Pad Thai, rated 2 out of 5. It combined noodles with stir-fried egg, bean sprouts, green onion, sweet radish, red tofu, ground peanuts and crispy wonton skin. Although its taste became more appealing with each bite, the ingredients never fully came together, and the dish needed more spice.
Overall, My Home Thai Bistro offers a welcoming setting, friendly service and several memorable dishes despite an uneven menu. First-time visitors may have the best experience by asking the staff which selections are most popular, since those proved to be the strongest choices at the table.
