A falling tree caused a fatal crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington on Thursday morning, closing the roadway for hours. The crash occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. during rainy weather in the southbound lanes near Chain Bridge.
Authorities identified the suspected gunman in Thursday’s Old Dominion University shooting as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Sterling resident. One person was killed and two were wounded in the shooting. Jalloh was convicted nine years ago of attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
Virginia lawmakers are negotiating final language for legislation sponsored by Del. Karrie Delaney that would tighten rules for speed cameras. Localities could retain camera revenue but would have to spend it exclusively on roadway safety. The measure would also require signs showing drivers their speed and limit construction-zone camera use to times when workers are present. Versions have passed both General Assembly chambers.
Emergency repairs to the Potomac Interceptor sewer system are expected to cost about $30 million, according to Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Water Program Resources Director Steve Bieber. More extensive capital work could reach roughly $600 million over the next decade. Regional officials received an update on the project Wednesday.
Another bill under negotiation in Richmond would let hospital employees store and administer medical cannabis oil for patients with valid medical certifications. Virginia already permits certified patients to use medical cannabis and allows it in nursing homes, hospices and assisted-living facilities, but hospitals remain excluded.

The Vienna Police Department has selected David Huchler as its next deputy police chief following Dan Janickey’s promotion to chief. Huchler previously held the deputy chief position in Alexandria and served as police chief for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority until January. He will begin working for Vienna on April 6.
Fairfax County is seeking volunteers for Earth Day Fairfax, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. The event is billed as the county’s largest Earth Day celebration.
Friday’s forecast calls for thickening clouds and a high near 54 degrees. South winds of 7 to 22 mph could gust as high as 38 mph. Skies are expected to clear overnight as temperatures fall to around 42 degrees.
