A police standoff at a 7-Eleven on Columbia Pike ended with officers fatally shooting a man Friday, May 8. Arlington County police said the man had barricaded himself inside the convenience store, was reportedly armed with a knife and was shot after officers attempted to take him into custody.
Two road closures are beginning Monday, May 11, in Fairfax County. Willowmeade Drive between Route 29 and Knight Arch Road will remain closed from 7 a.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Thursday, May 14, for intersection work tied to the Route 29 widening project.
A section of Taft Drive is also scheduled to close at 9 a.m. Monday for work on the Rolling Road widening project. That closure is expected to last about a month.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a new use for a Springfield property containing two vacant office buildings. On May 5, the board authorized rezoning 6850 Versar Center from the I-5 district to the C-8 district, allowing passenger vehicle sales at the site in Mason District.
The Department of Justice formally launched an investigation into Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano during the week before May 11. Former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi expressed skepticism, suggesting the announcement itself may be the point rather than the investigation.
A Woodbridge man is facing federal firearms charges stemming from a Feb. 18 domestic dispute in Herndon. Federal authorities assumed the prosecution after charges of carrying a concealed weapon and obstruction of justice were dropped May 5 in Fairfax County General District Court.
Fairfax County native Maggie Mrowka has led the College of Charleston softball team to its first title. Mrowka became the youngest head coach in Division I college softball when she took control of the program in 2025. In her first season leading the Cougars, she guided the team to one of the most significant achievements in program history.
Falls Church will begin offering monthly walking tours of Oakwood Cemetery at 4 p.m. May 24. The tours will examine the cemetery and the lives of people buried there as part of the city’s 2026 commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Jim Coyle, chair of the Falls Church250 Committee, welcomed the addition.
Fairfax County is offering caregivers a new virtual training series designed to provide insight into aging and end-of-life care. Developed by Embodied Labs, “Exploring the Dimensions of Aging through Virtual Reality” aims to help people better understand the stressful and often confusing experience of caring for a loved one near the end of life.
