The Fairfax County School Board approved a sweeping update to its secondary grading policy on Jan. 9, along with new requirements covering student work habits, online learning systems and transcript details.
The revised Policy 2418 governs secondary grades, assessments and reporting on student learning. It was previously titled “Reporting Student Progress to Parents and Guardians.”
Board members directed Superintendent Michelle Reid to ensure that learning management and grade-reporting systems are used consistently by students, employees and families as the policy takes effect.
Reid must also present options for reporting student work habits separately when the Secondary Grading Committee delivers its report. Additional directives require transcripts to identify the campus where each course was taken and the FCPS School Profile sent to colleges to explain how students apply and are selected for Online Campus and Academy courses.
Two existing policies—Policy 2436 on the pass-fail option and Policy 3205 on homework—will be retired Aug. 1, 2025, because their provisions are now included in Policy 2418.
The board also approved the fiscal year 2025 midyear financial review and related adjustments to revenue and spending.
During its oversight work, the board approved the 2024-25 report for Strategic Plan Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.
The board revisited Executive Limitation 4, which establishes human-resources guardrails for the superintendent. Board members had found Reid out of compliance at their Dec. 5, 2024, meeting and requested a corrective-action memorandum. Reid submitted the memo Dec. 19 and presented a corrective-action plan Jan. 9. The board then found her in compliance and approved the monitoring report and plan.
Reid also delivered presentations on Algebra 1 and other superintendent matters. The consent agenda included minutes from the Nov. 14, 2024, meeting, advisory committee appointments, the monthly employee-separation report and several contracts.
Seven people addressed the board during the public-comment period, and student representative Megan Sawant presented student matters.
The meeting began at 7:25 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a performance of the national anthem by the Stone Middle School Jazz Ensemble under Christen Reddig’s direction. The board also approved a proclamation recognizing Annandale Terrace Elementary School’s 60th anniversary.
Governance Committee and Public Engagement Committee reports were delivered before the meeting adjourned at 11:15 p.m.
