Fairfax County Public Schools finalized its purchase of the former King Abdullah Academy campus in Herndon on Friday, Aug. 15, acquiring a ready-made educational site for $150 million.
The governing board approved the purchase and sale agreement June 12. The deal includes the land, building, furniture, technology and equipment.
FCPS estimates that purchasing land and constructing a new school in western Fairfax County would cost more than $430 million. Acquiring the existing property is therefore expected to save approximately $280 million while helping the division expand educational opportunities in that part of the county.
The nearly 33-acre campus offers 325,000 square feet of modern educational space. It includes large multipurpose halls, libraries, study rooms, fine arts facilities and athletic areas.
Because the transaction closed shortly before the start of the coming academic year and the campus requires careful planning, FCPS does not expect to use the property fully until the 2026-27 school year.
