A major rewrite of FCPS secondary grading policy won approval Jan. 9, 2025, bringing rules for grades, assessments, homework and pass-fail courses under one policy.
The updated Policy 2418 governs secondary grades, assessment, grading and reporting on students’ learning progress. It was previously known as “Reporting Student Progress to Parents and Guardians.”
Alongside the policy change, board members directed Superintendent Michelle Reid to ensure students, employees and families can use learning-management and grade-reporting technology consistently and effectively.
Reid was also asked to present options for reporting student work habits separately when the Secondary Grading Committee delivers its report.
Other directives require transcripts to show the campus or location where a student took each course. The FCPS School Profile shared with colleges must also explain how students apply and are selected for Online Campus and academy courses.
Separate policies governing the pass-fail option and homework will be retired Aug. 1, 2025, because their provisions are now included in Policy 2418.
Board members also approved the fiscal 2025 midyear financial review and related adjustments to revenue and spending.
Human resources plan resolves compliance finding
The board found Reid in compliance with Executive Limitation 4, an operational requirement covering human resources, after reviewing her corrective action plan.
Reid had been found out of compliance at the Dec. 5, 2024, regular meeting, prompting a request for a memorandum addressing several issues. She submitted the memo Dec. 19 and presented the corrective plan at the January meeting. The associated monitoring report and plan were approved.
Reid also presented the 2024-25 report for Strategic Plan Goal 2, “Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.” Board members approved the report, which reviews progress and planned work tied to one of the strategic plan’s five goal areas.
Additional presentations addressed Algebra 1 and other superintendent matters.
The consent agenda included minutes from the Nov. 14, 2024, meeting, additional advisory committee appointments, the monthly employee separation report and several contracts.
The Jan. 9 meeting began at 7:25 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a performance of the national anthem by the Stone Middle School Jazz Ensemble under Christen Reddig’s direction. A proclamation honoring Annandale Terrace Elementary School’s 60th anniversary was also approved.
Seven members of the public spoke during community participation, and student representative Megan Sawant presented her report.
The session closed with a Governance Committee report from Ms. Lady, a Public Engagement Committee report from Ms. St. John-Cunning and board matters. The meeting adjourned at 11:15 p.m.
